Reading time is the word count divided by a reading speed in words per minute. Adult silent reading of general prose averages around 230–240 words per minute, which is the default here. You can change the speed to match your audience or your own pace.
Why is the read-aloud time so much longer?
Speaking is far slower than silent reading. A comfortable presenting pace is about 130 words per minute, so a passage that takes two minutes to read silently can take three or four minutes to deliver aloud. Use the read-aloud figure when you are timing a talk or a script.
Does difficulty affect reading time?
Yes. Dense, technical, or unfamiliar material reads more slowly than plain prose, and readers often re-read hard passages. Treat the estimate as a baseline for average text and add a margin for difficult content.
