The dense passage scores as very difficult because its sentences and words are genuinely long — not because it is badly written. How to use this page when planning a document
Start from whichever row is closest to what you are actually writing, then treat every column as a planning estimate rather than a promise. The word count is the only number in the table you control directly; everything else — pages, reading time, writing time — is derived from it under stated assumptions that your own document may not exactly match. A term paper with heavy formatting, unusually short sentences, or a much faster or slower drafting pace than the defaults used here will land somewhere different, and that is expected.
The two tables are intentionally independent of each other. The top table is about length: how a word count turns into pages, reading time, and writing time. The bottom table is about density: what happens to a readability score as sentences and words get longer, regardless of how long the overall document is. A short document can be written densely, and a long one can be written plainly — length and readability are separate variables, and this page keeps them in separate tables on purpose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the numbers on this page come from?
Every figure is computed directly from the same functions behind the individual calculators on this site — the word-to-page converter, the reading-time estimator, the writing-time planner, and the readability scorer — not from a separately maintained table. If a calculator's formula ever changes, this page's numbers change with it automatically.
Why does the page count depend on spacing?
Double spacing inserts a full blank line's worth of vertical space between each line of text, so a double-spaced page holds roughly half as many words as a single-spaced one at the same font and margins — 250 words per page instead of 500. That is why every row below shows double-spaced pages at almost exactly twice the single-spaced count.
Why is the writing-time estimate probably wrong for me specifically?
The writing-hours column assumes a sustained drafting pace of 300 words an hour and 2 focused writing hours a day — a reasonable middle estimate, not a measurement of you. Your own pace depends on how familiar you are with the material, how settled your argument already is, and how much revision-as-you-go you do. Time an actual drafting session of your own and use that number instead once you have it.
Do the readability samples mean short documents are always "easier"?
No — the three samples are three fixed short passages written at different sentence and syllable densities, not the five document-length milestones in the table above. Length and density are independent: a 500-word passage can be written densely, and a 20,000-word dissertation can be written plainly. The samples exist to show what the readability formula responds to, separately from how long a document is.
